Entries from December 2008
When I was in college, my friend and I used to utter something in unison - in deep, mock-serious, overly-dramatic voices – when things got dicey or confusing:
“Who knows what the future may bring…”
May 2009 be a year of happiness and all good things for all of my friends and family.
With love, Michele

A couple of months ago I was visiting my sister. It was way early in the morning and she was on her laptop at the dining room table when I asked If I could use the pc when she was done, and walked over behind her and saw “Match.com” on the screen. “What?!” [me] and “shriek – I didn’t want you to see it!” – [her.]
Once over that hurdle, everything came out.
This is why she is coloring her hair and wearing makeup for the first time since – ever. She is back in the game, 6 years after her husband passed away. It has taken her 6 years.
She told me about the “winks” – you wink at the guys you are interested in. So I ask, how many guys did you wink at? Her answer? 54.
Now, she has met a guy she likes and I am trying to be supportive. But, you never know – who is this guy? They have talked on the phone for months, she has had 3 dates with him, and they have exchanged Christmas presents. We may meet him this weekend, we are going to NYC.

My first trip to Paris was with my mother and a couple of her friends. 4 single women in Paris for a week, we hit the tourist spots and museums and shops by day, and hit the clubs at night.
I was reminded of this by Kitty, who posted a beautiful photo of Spanky getting her portrait done in Montmartre.
My mother and I had ours done there together, and it has been sitting in the closet all these years. I found it.

My mother looked at it right after it was done and pouted. “I look so old….”
She meant, “so old next to you.”
So she went back and had hers done again – by herself. I have no idea where that one is.

We are watching “Woman of the Year” at my mother’s house.
Katherine Hepburn. Spencer Tracy.
And there is a long scene with no dialogue. A very funny scene in the kitchen that speaks volumes.
And after a minute or so, my mother says -
“There’s not much script in here it’s all silent.”
I say “what did you say?” A little testily, I may add.
Husband laughs.
I ask her – “what do you think is going on there – ad libbing?”
[In defense of being too mean to the mother, I had just today painstakingly written a whole page of script with just one line of dialogue. Sigh.]

I got the Blackberry Storm as an early Christmas gift, and love, love, love it.
But.
You see the touch screen?

Let’s just say that it is not too easy to type on this thing without hitting letters one does not mean to type. Jeez, is it the design of the touchscreen, or -
do I just have really fat fingers?
[p.s. that is not my thumb above]

Well, I guess I won’t be wearing
<——- these, for a while.
It happened yesterday morning.
The phone rang as I stepped out of the shower and rang and rang and rang, and –
clearly the husband was not getting it [he was outside smoking.]
So I ran for the phone, damp and towel-wrapped -
and jammed my pinky toe backwards against the bathroom door-board.
It did not hurt much – until last night, after I had been standing, cooking all afternoon. Then it began to hurt like a mother-f-er, 2 high power aspirin made no dent in the pain.
And then I took a look at it.
Good lord, it is all purple and 5 times the size it should be, and possibly broken – ack!
So, the foot is up and iced, and I am out of commission for a few days – I hope that is all.
I may tape it – I read that is all that is done if it is broken anyway.
Damn toe.

This morning I made the the cranberry scones. I do this every Christmas – hot scones and coffee.

At 10:30, I call my father, wish him a happy holiday, & see if he likes the gifts we shipped. They are the only gifts he gets, except this year his nurse baked him some cookies.
At 11:00, my mother comes over and we drink wine and eat cheese and open the gifts. We don’t do a tree, we put the gifts in the “library.” [See that little pic in the bookcase? Guess who that is...]

And then – I cook. Nothing fancy this year, we just got home last night.
Happy holidays to all of my dear friends.

At my father’s house yesterday -
which was quite warm, these old folks like it that way -
the husband was vacuuming the house.
My father and I were talking in the kitchen when the husband made it to the bedroom after finishing the rest of the house – the bedroom where my stepmother Pennie passed away a few years ago.
And by now, the husband is in a sweat. It is really warm in there.
And -
someone turned on the ceiling fan.
